BELBIN

Some teams could be formed by highly qualified and skilled people, but we usually see that some perform better than others, what is the secret behind?

In the 70s, Dr. Meredith Belbin and her team developed an agile practice, called: BELBIN. This practice helps in determining the different roles of the team members and defining the strength and weakness of each one of them, which helps in optimizing the team performance and productivity.

This technique puts teams under tests and observation to evaluate the collective performance of the team members, by identifying their reactions to different situations, their weaknesses and strengths, and their skills and values.

What are the main « roles » that are spotted within a successful team?

Dr. Belbin and her researchers have identified 9 attitudes or manners to act and interact as a team member, that they are known as: TEAM ROLES. They identified 9 team roles :

  • The ACTION ORIENTED roles: Shaper, Implementer, Completer finisher;
  • The PEOPLE ORIENTED roles: Coordinator, Team Worker, Resource Investigator;
  • The CEREBRAL roles:  Plant, Monitor Evaluator, Specialist.

A team including most of these roles is considered as a successful and productive team.

How could the belbin practice be applied?

Firstly, team members must understand how their behaviors and emotions can impact the team productivity, that’s why a questionnaire could be the main way to understand the team members, and knowing who does what and who has which roles.

Then, we organize a small workshop to define who will play what role in this team. The purpose of this action is to determine the complementarity of behaviors in the team. Meredith was right when she said: “A successful team is composite of individuals with contrasting and complementary roles“.
