In the previous article, we talked about the Definition of Done. Today we’ll discover the Definition of Ready (DoR), a practice that is as popular as DoD, and highly recommended by many agility specialists. It represents all of the acceptance criteria that define the user story even more precisely.
THE DEFINITION OF READY DOR
In the Scrum team: you list all the criteria necessary to facilitate the work between the team members during the sprint.
The Definition Of Ready (FOR) is the list of expected elements that a user story must gather to be offered for development.
To define the DoR, you prepare a list of requirements for a user-story to be READY. All user stories should be INVEST: independent, negotiable, Valuable, estimable, and testable. You have to put acceptance tests to see if the user-story is valid (It is recommended to use the BDD to specify the acceptance criteria).
THE DOR: A CONSTRAINT OR A TOOL?
DoR is a tool that helps in achieving your sprints. It meets the needs of the scrum team to know the different acceptance criteria that concern a user story during its development step. And so, DoR is a collaborative tool, not a constraint. It allows the agile team to work smoothly and efficiently during the sprint and to better understand the functional need (or the customer’s need). Over time, the team will become more mature and will tend to enrich their DoR.
To practice this tool well and work smoothly, you answer these questions :
- For who?
- Why?
- What?
- How?
What to keep in mind:
Finally, the DoR is not a scrum requirement, but it is very useful for clarifying user stories, fueling tests to be performed on the user story, and optimizing the team’s work in a sprint.
Tell us about your DoR, and let us know what you think.
