The Personal Map is a technique that allows you to express yourself clearly and concisely, and to know more about your team members.

What does this technique consist of?

The process of the Personal Map:

How Robert described his Personal Map?

To make your Personal Map, you need post-it notes, sheets (A4 or A3), and markers to write down the different thoughts. We will describe to you, next, how you can make a good Personal Map workshop:

First:

Each participant will draw or write their name in the middle of a sheet and circle it. Then, you write down the most important things in everyone’s life and link them with their name (or drawing). Like Robert’s example:

Personal Map Example 1

Second:

Robert noted three key parts in his life: family, work, and football. Now he will go into detail on these three points while indicating the different points of interest related to each of what he wrote, while circling them as well:

Personal Map Example 2

Robert described his points of interest. By this, you can therefore understand what other participants are thinking, and know their interests.

A good way to get to know yourself, isn’t it?

When the Personal Map is practiced between team members, it promotes team networking, and allows members to get to know each other even more.

Here is another example:

The Personal Map is a good exercise to learn more about your team members, which will help managers and team leaders manage better and know how to act with each team member. It helps a lot to have a united and happy team and increase its productivity and performance.

Here is my Personal Map:

I did use the following personal map to present myself before giving conferences, and I received great feedback about it:
